Charleston Harbor History Overview

In April 1670, the first English colonists sailed into Charleston harbor. This band of some 150 men and women soon established themselves on what they called Albemarle Point on the Ashley River. Charleston: Population Profile Charleston: Municipal Government.

In May of 1718, Edward Teach — more commonly known as Blackbeard — blockaded Charleston Harbor with a fleet of ships, including his Queen Anne's Revenge and the ship of Stede Bonnet, the so-called "Gentleman Pirate.

Charleston's greatest asset was its harbor, which had been defended effectively at the Battle of Fort Sullivan on June 28, 1776. Lincoln relied on Commodore Abraham Whipple's expertise for protecting Charleston Harbor in the face of this new assaults.

On January 9, 1861, the ship arrived at Charleston Harbor, but turned back when it was fired upon by South Carolina's batteries. Despite the outbreak of fighting, war did not ensue. As at Pensacola, a precarious truce went into effect in Charleston Harbor.

Feb. 17, 1864, after plunging a 90-pound charge into the hull of the Housatonic, a Union ship enforcing a blockade of Charleston harbor. The ship sank minutes after the explosion ripped a hole in its hull, but the Hunley never returned from its historic mission.

Aug 2000] The Hunley Commission was formed to examine, preserve, and display the submarine, which was raised from Charleston Harbor in August 2000.
