Charleston Battery Is One Of The Most Beautiful Spots In The United States
The Battery, sits at the southernmost point of the Charleston peninsula, where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers let out into the Atlantic Ocean. It opened in 1837 as a public park, the Battery was fortified during the Civil War to protect the city against Union troops. Fort Sumter is visible from the Cooper River side of Battery Point, as is Castle Pinckney, the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan's Island.
